“Social Development” organizes a Garangao Festival for children with Down Syndrome

The Ministry of Social Development and Family, represented by the Community Care Department, in cooperation with the Shafallah Center, organized the Garangao celebration for children with Down Syndrome, with the aim of integrating persons with disabilities into effective participation in society, and raising awareness among individuals about Down Syndrome.

This celebration comes in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day, which falls on March 21 of each year. A group of children from the center’s employees, wearing traditional clothing, distributed the Garangao bags that had been prepared by them to Her Excellency Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Misnad and the assistant undersecretaries of the Ministry, to enhance the well-being of people with disabilities and their integration into society.

In this regard, Mrs. Reem Khalifa Al-Ajmi, Director of the Community Care Department, said, “The Ministry organizes annual celebrations coinciding with international days, such as World Down Syndrome Day, with the aim of raising community awareness.” She also confirmed that the Community Care Department seeks to implement awareness lectures, workshops, and recreational activities, guiding them on how to deal with these groups as well as educating them about ways of social integration.

She added that the State of Qatar is keen to achieve many achievements in the field of supporting and caring for people with disabilities, in terms of education and social security, pointing out that the state’s care for this segment of society includes them in all fields: sports, education, universities, and everything that supports them and facilitates their lives.

She emphasized the Ministry's role in strengthening the family and its members with disabilities by providing basic needs to ensure equal opportunities among citizens, and implementing and developing strategies, plans and policies that carry within them the Qatar National Vision 2030 to achieve social development.

Within this context, social development is one of the pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030, through which it seeks to achieve a just and secure society based on good morals and social care and capable of dealing and interacting with other societies.
