MSDF Organizes Event on International Day of Sign Languages
The Ministry of Social Development and Family (MSDF), represented by the Community Care Department, organized an awareness event in collaboration with the Audiology Education Complex titled: “Hearing Their Hearts Through Sign Language.” The event took place on Tuesday at the Family Counseling Center (Wifaq) to mark the International Day of Sign Languages, which is observed annually on September 23rd.
This event aims to integrate the deaf community into society, enable their social participation, raise awareness of the rights of deaf people, and encourage the use of sign language for communication. This day presents a unique opportunity to raise awareness about the issues faced by deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals worldwide.
The event commenced with students from the Audiology Education Complex presenting the Amiri Salute in sign language, followed by a recitation from the Holy Quran by a student from the hard-of-hearing category. The activities featured a theatrical performance in sign language titled “The Hero of the Story,” which embodied the concept of the right of people with hearing disabilities to employment, active participation in the community, and ensuring their involvement in various fields. This performance reflects society's commitment to supporting and empowering them.
In this context, Ms. Reem Khalifa Al Ajmi, Director of the Community Care Department at the MSDF, affirmed: "Through this event, we seek to highlight the deaf community and enhance societal awareness of their rights and capabilities through diverse activities that showcase their skills, roles, and creativity in society." She added: "On this day, we renew our collective commitment to supporting the rights of people with hearing disabilities and promoting their active participation in various aspects of life. We believe that the responsibility we share and the diversity that unites us are the secret to any society's strength; through our shared responsibility, we create impact."
The event was also accompanied by a side exhibition featuring works by deaf students, such as artwork, handicrafts, school projects, and creative expressions in sign language. The Community Care Department within the Ministry is committed to providing comprehensive and sustainable support for people with disabilities by implementing programs and initiatives aimed at their effective empowerment and integration into society. This includes ensuring equal opportunities for all members of the community and urging all relevant state entities to cooperate and partner to build a more inclusive society.
This event reflects the objectives of the MSDF's National Strategy 2025–2030, under the slogan "From Care to Empowerment," by achieving an inclusive and enabling society for the priority-care categories.
