“Social Development” Celebrates World Down's Syndrome Day in Collaboration with AlShafallah Centre
The Ministry of Social Development and Family, represented by the Community Welfare Department, in cooperation with Alshafallah Center for Persons with Disabilities, organized an educational and entertaining workshop on World Down Syndrome Day, which falls on the twenty-first of March of each year, at the Ceramic Cube studio.
This workshop comes in celebration of the World Down Syndrome Day, which came this year under the slogan: “With us, not for us”, which emphasizes the human rights-based approach in dealing with persons with disabilities. The Ministry aims, through the organization of the "Ceramic Industry" workshop, to practice useful handicrafts for Alshfallah Center's employees with Down syndrome, and to bring happiness and joy to them through educational recreational activities, in addition to the participation of people with disabilities and their integration into society. The interaction of children was evident in this workshop through full immersion, feeling pride and joy when seeing their wonderful pieces of art of ceramic art.
In this regard, Mrs. Reem Khalifa Al-Ajmi, Acting Director of the Community Care Department, said: The Ministry organizes annual celebrations coinciding with international days, such as the World Down Syndrome Day, to educate the community. It also confirms that the Community Care Department provides several services to the target groups, including implementing educational lectures and workshops in cooperation with the relevant authorities, recreational activities, educational media campaigns, in addition to developing and caring for the family and guiding it on how to deal with these groups and educating them on methods of adaptation and social integration.
For his part, Eng. Hamid Al-Qahtani, a social entrepreneur, potter, and owner of "Ceramic Cube" shop, said: Pottery. Being considered as one of the safest activities for children with disabilities, pottery gives them an atmosphere of pleasure and works to unload their energies in fruitful and useful work at the same time.” He added: “Ceramic Cube” store aims to introduce pottery and its aesthetic role, providing the appropriate place and tools for ceramic lovers to practice Their hobby is to provide an opportunity for those who wish to learn the traditional ceramic craft, in addition to reviving the ceramic culture in society as a whole.
Moreover, the Ministry is keen to commemorate this day and provide equal opportunities for all individuals with Down syndrome and empower their capabilities by understanding and assimilating the challenges they face, enhancing public awareness of this syndrome, defending the rights of individuals with Down syndrome and integrating them into societies, and ensuring a luxurious life for them to enjoy like other human beings, and to improve the quality of life of these individuals by meeting their needs through their healthcare. It strives to display their capabilities and skills and to present successful models of them to society.
